Salesforce in Claude: What Malaysian SMEs Must Learn

Why Salesforce Putting Its CRM Inside Claude Matters to You

Imagine asking one chat window, “Which customers need a follow-up this week, what happened in the last meeting, and what should I do next?” Instead of opening several screens, searching customer records and preparing a report manually, an AI assistant could answer using your live CRM data and carry out approved actions.

That is the direction behind Salesforce and Anthropic’s newly announced “Claudeforce” partnership. According to VentureBeat, Salesforce is placing its CRM capabilities inside Claude through a plugin called Salesforce in Claude. The announcement is aimed at larger enterprise customers, but the lesson is highly relevant to Malaysian SMEs: business software is increasingly becoming something you talk to, rather than something you navigate.

What Happened

Salesforce and Anthropic announced an expanded partnership called Claudeforce. The central product, Salesforce in Claude, is designed for Claude CoWork and includes 37 pre-built sales skills, covering activities such as meeting preparation, deal-health reviews and pipeline analysis, according to VentureBeat.

Selected customers can pilot the product, with an open beta planned for September and more business-function skills expected to launch from the third quarter, as reported by VentureBeat. Users can ask Claude to query, update and act on live Salesforce data without opening the Salesforce application itself.

The arrangement grew from Salesforce’s Headless 360 initiative, introduced at its TDX developer conference in March. The initiative provides APIs, MCP servers and command-line tools that allow AI agents to interact with Salesforce data, workflows and governance rules without relying on a conventional human interface, according to VentureBeat.

The companies also highlighted permission controls. When a user asks Claude to read or update a record, the request is handled through Salesforce’s MCP server and inherits the user’s existing permissions. A person who cannot access a particular record should not gain access simply by using Claude, based on Salesforce’s explanation reported by VentureBeat.

Why This Matters for Malaysian SMEs

Many Malaysian SME teams still manage sales and customer service through a mixture of WhatsApp, spreadsheets, email, accounting software and shared folders. The problem is rarely a lack of data. The problem is that information is spread across too many places, and someone must manually combine it before making a decision.

A conversational business system could make that work more practical. A sales manager could ask, “Show me all open quotations that have not received a reply in seven days.” A property agency could ask, “Which leads viewed a unit but have not booked a second appointment?” A distributor could ask, “Which retailers ordered last month but have not reordered this month?” The assistant would need connected, structured records to provide reliable answers, but the user would not need to know where every field is stored.

For a Malaysian service business, the same approach could support daily operations. You might ask for a list of customers whose maintenance renewals are due soon, identify unresolved support cases, or prepare a morning briefing for your team. A small manufacturer could use a similar workflow to review pending enquiries, overdue quotations and accounts requiring follow-up.

However, the Salesforce announcement does not mean you should immediately replace every system with an AI assistant. It shows why clean records, consistent processes and access controls are becoming more important. If your customer information is incomplete or duplicated, an AI assistant may produce a faster summary of unreliable information.

Business area Possible AI-assisted request What you need first
Sales “Which quotations need follow-up today?” Updated quotation and customer records
Customer service “Summarise unresolved complaints by urgency.” Consistent case status and notes
Operations “Which jobs are at risk of missing their deadline?” Clear task owners and due dates
Management “Prepare this week’s sales and service briefing.” Connected reporting data

Start with the Work, Not the Tool

Before selecting an AI solution, list the repetitive questions your team asks every week. These questions often reveal the best starting points. You may discover that staff repeatedly search for customer history, prepare sales updates, compare outstanding tasks or copy information between systems.

Choose one workflow with a clear owner and a measurable result. For example, begin with daily quotation follow-ups rather than attempting to automate your entire business. Define which data the assistant may read, which actions it may recommend and which actions require approval.

“The value of Salesforce is not in our UI itself. The value … is in the data and the metadata,” Salesforce executive Patrick Stokes told VentureBeat.

That observation applies even if you do not use Salesforce. Your valuable business asset is not merely the software screen. It is the history of customer interactions, pricing rules, service procedures, approval steps and operating knowledge captured in your systems.

Security and Governance Cannot Be Optional

An AI assistant that can read or update records must be treated as part of your business system, not as a casual chat application. Review user permissions before connecting any data. Sales staff may need access to their own opportunities, while managers may require broader visibility. Administrative and financial records should be protected separately.

You should also decide whether the AI can perform actions automatically. Reading a customer history is different from changing a quotation, sending a message or marking an invoice as paid. For important activities, require a human approval step and retain an activity log. Ask your provider how data is stored, how access is managed and whether your information is used to train models.

The Bigger Picture

Salesforce’s move suggests a wider change in business software. Applications may still contain the underlying records and rules, but employees may increasingly reach those capabilities through assistants. In this model, the software screen becomes only one possible doorway.

For SME owners, the practical advantage is not avoiding an application for its own sake. It is reducing the time your team spends searching, copying and summarising information. That can help a small team respond more consistently without adding layers of administration.

The caution is equally important. An AI assistant does not replace sound processes. It cannot repair unclear ownership, missing records or conflicting instructions. Start by organising your customer and operational data, then automate a narrow workflow, test the results and expand only when the controls are working.

The Claudeforce announcement is therefore less about one global CRM vendor and more about the next interface for work. Whether you run a trading company in Johor, a services firm in Penang or a retail business in Selangor, you should begin asking a simple question: which parts of your daily operation should your team be able to request in plain language, with the right data and permissions behind the answer?
